Opening of The Time Machine
The Time Machine was born after I attended a training course entitled "Altering Perceptions on Dementia". One of the speakers was a 90 year old gentleman who was the main carer for his wife of 70 years
who had developed dementia a few years previously. He was doing his best under difficult conditions. He got very little sleep but was determined that his wife would "never go in a home". His wife went to a day-centre two days a week and although he appreciated the rest, he said he spent all day looking at the clock waiting to go and collect her. He did not like to be separated from "the love of my life". I asked if there was anywhere they could go together. He replied that he planned activites to get them out of the house on the days she didn't go to the centre. On his own admission they weren't any fun but it stopped him from "going nuts". SO I thought, as a community, we can do better than that!
