“What’s it like to live in a care home?”
Healthwatch have just published the findings from a recent review. “What’s it like to live in a care home?”. In the period January 2016 to April 2017, they visited 197 care homes, in 63 different local authority areas. Their findings identify good practice and provides a platform for those working in social care to reflect.
Amongst the experiences that people shared with Healthwatch, three key themes were identified:-
- The quality of care varies between homes, and within the same home, with too few homes getting the basics right every time.
- Good care homes meet all people’s health and care needs, working with other services where additional support is needed.
- The best residential services are the ones that focus on enabling people to continue living as if they were still in their own home.
They also noted that where complaint systems don’t work well, everyone loses out, but especially those who take the time and trouble to complain in the first place. Use the link below to see the full report.
