Badges (again!)

Dignity in care policy team 08/03/09 Dignity Champions forum

Whether or not Dignity Champions should have a unique badge has already generated a lot of debate! It's clear that views are mixed! The Campaign policy team have been thinking about creating a badge for some time. The problem we hit is that we're being told that many hospitals (and care homes?) are discouraging staff from wearing badges or jewellery while on duty because of the risks of spreading infection etc. If that is so, it doesn't mean badges have no place but it does limit their usefulness. Without starting the "for" and "against" debate again, we'd be interested to know your hospital or care home's attitude to badges.

No badge in my nursing home. Our badge is our actions.

Couldn't the badge be made without a pin? I believe if the principles from this are to be taken seriously, then some form of identification, like a badge would surely be fantastic for spreading awareness on the matter.
As for my workplace, we do not have a policy on badges and i think the proprietor would be supportive of a campaign such as this to ensure her staffs' understanding of the matter

Old forum user 10/03/09

I attended the older peoples champion course at our hospital yesterday. The day ended with us being given a badge! I have been asked a lot about this badge , it can only help spread awareness

Old forum user 17/03/09

we have been given unique dignity champion badges by Wendy Averall, she supports and helps a group af dignity champions fron the southern cross healthcare group.
it does have an impact in the dignity awarness and pinning it on your lapelle does not touch anybody or anything to cross infect.

Chin up it is only a matter of time before you receive your deserved badge! :)

Old forum user 26/03/09

I also am an independent trainer and do some Dignity Champions training, some for Southern Cross Healthcare. I issue certificates for display in the homes and one of the Managers has issued badges for his 'Champions.'

Old forum user 16/04/09

How about silicon wrist bands that alot of charities use?
No pins or Health & Safety issues.
I think that if Dignity Champions were to wear these then we could really spread the word about the campaign.
If you type in charity wristbands on google there are many companys out there that will supply them.

Hi I am Dignity Champion in a Southern Cross home. We have not as yet been given a badge

May I quote Robbie Burns
"The badge is but a guinea stamp,
The man himself, the gold"

Old forum user 04/05/09

Hi All

I am a Dignity Champion with Southerncross Healthcare in the southeast. Having attended an introduction day last Tuesday, we were all issued with a badge. The Dignity Champion course will be held for twelve sessions, one a month.

Hope you get yours soon!

Lorraine Morgan 05/05/09

HI All,

It seems quite a few people are enquiring about training on Dignity.
Could I suggest that they look at our website www.dignifiedrevolution.org.uk and what we are about.

Also - the Open Unviversity - for whom I work - offers a wonderful values-based course for health and social care workers. http://www3.open.ac.uk/courses/bin/p12.dll?C01K101 There is lots of information also on the OU/RCN Alliance website for employers - in terms of access to free courses for support workers whose income is below a certain amount.
http://www.open.ac.uk/cam/healthemployer/

A Dignified Revolution are not funded and our 4 members undertake work as volunteers - however, we now ask for a reasonable charge for training as we need to fund our public access website.

When you look at our website I am sure you will agree that we are very challenging in our approach and feel that we have achieved considerable influence in thinking - in terms of trying to change attitudes and practices for the better.

Monica at [log in to view email address] is the person to contact regarding further information on what we can offer.
Monica, as well as myself are founder members.

Best Wishes,

Lorraine

James Purcell 14/05/09

Hello All, I have been reading about the idea of a Badge and as a registered manager can understand the concerns of wearing badges to work and I wonder if it would not be an idea to get badges that can be sewn onto to uniforms etc. this will remove the fear of pins sticking into clients and they would be washed as often as the tunics so there would be no fear of contamination. Just an idea Jim

Jackie Embleton 15/05/09

hi our residental staff have badges which are made with magnets so have no pin but wrist bands are a good idea even if dignity champions would like too pay for there own.

rebecca hadley 21/10/10

could you please send me a dignity badge
