Care home training in values and difficult care home owners
HI,
1 A Dignified Revolution has done some dignity and respect inhouse training for care homes and care home groups in Wales - we are happy to talk with anyone further if you contact [log in to view email address] and talk with Monica or look on website www.dignifiedrevolution.org.uk
2 Another option is to look at the OU openlearn site (google OpenLearn and OU) where there are free resources to download and use from some of our health and social care courses. K100/K101 in particular which is our foundation course and totally based on the values and principles of care.
If you wish more formal use then do have a look at K101 for your staff, on OU main website, as it has an integrated NVQ Level 3 Health and social care within the course and paper-free assessment. The underpinning knowledge for the NVQ is contained in the course and the OU NVQ centre matches the assignments to the NVQ.
Also have a look at the OU Silverville set of BBC programme which begin on Friday. You can download these for use in training.
3 Please do look at the website My Home Life. There are lots of free resources on there for care homes to use.My Home Life is a UK project begun within Help the Aged and now continues in partnership with Joseph Rowntree Trust and the main steering group.
Do contact the project director - Professor Julienne Meyer, who is based at City university. There is a DVD which can be used in training.
I know about My Home Life because I am the Chair. Help the Aged won a funding bid from the Welsh Assembly government last year from the Health Ageing section to develop a more action research project in Wales.
There is a newsletter available soon which explains this project and I am happy to send it out - or put it through DiC once it is complete. We have 8 pilot homes in Wales (ranging from very small, residential, rural to large and urban.
Wales' own My Home Life website should begin once the brand for the new charity (merger of Age Concern Cymru and Help the Aged in Wales)i organised. Until that time please look at the Wales section on the main My Home Life website. www.myhomelife.org.uk
Hope that you find one option to suit you.
My background was 12 years in managing care homes for a housing association as well as undertaking research in these. I completely understand that it is very difficult for some managers in some tightly owned care homes.
All I can say is that you use your professional union and/or your local care home managers group if you have one to keep up your moral and learn ways to challenge and change. The National Min Care Home Standards are being reviewed so lobbly your politicians to focus down on training linked with quality of care - mandatory of course.
Regards,
Lorraine Morgan
