Dignity Quiz

Liz Taylor 04/06/14 Dignity Champions forum

A Dignity Champion recently contacted us as to whether we had any quizzes available as she had been asked to put together a short ten question quiz to help staff think about the topic. Has anyone done this and if so would they be will to share.

Hi.
I have created this quiz for my carers, i hope it helps.
Im unsure as to how i upload the original document, but here is what i came up with.

Dignity

In your pairs, answer the questions below and come up with questions and/or suggestions, to discuss with the rest of the group.
You can use this group discussion in your everyday routine to improve upon what you already know, and to give the residents you look after, a better, more dignified experience.

What does the word 'Dignity' mean to you?

How can you help to promote Dignity, for your residents?

How does getting your residents involved, promote their Dignity?

When it comes to personal care, how much do you involve your resident?

Is the way in which your residents are addressed, respectful?

Are your residents in more of a routine, than they would perhaps like?

Is the Dignity of your residents being respected at all times?

Hi Liz,

Mikey has noticed (above) that it seems no longer possible to upload documents - i.e. to attach files. I noticed that a few days ago.

Is this deliberate, or is it an unintended side-effect of the website revamp ?

mike stone 22/01/15

I haven't prepared such a list, but I am very aware - and this is easy to see from reading various of these discussion topics - that 'dignity' means different things, to different people.

So, I think the first thing, is wherever possible, to as the person concerned 'do you think I/we are treating you with dignity ?': and if the answer is 'no/not always', ask why.

It gets more complicated, if the person concerned cannot tell you - the problem then, is to avoid too much projection of your own personal concept of 'dignity' onto the person receiving your care.

For many of the questions which pop-up in this discussion forum, the answers are not always clear - but thinking about the question, is almost always a good thing.

Hi oops I hadn't realised the facility to upload files has got lost. I will take that issue forward - thanks Mike. I'm sure that quiz questions could be derived from the dignity audits we have on this website. Meanwhile
this is a quiz I found on file:
Dignity Quiz

1.Give five key words that define dignity

2.Name a song that depicts dignity -

3.Name five types of abuse

4.Give two examples of how you ensure you treat each person as an individual

5.You notice that a resident's room has suddenly started to smell strongly of urine. - What do you do? What do you say?

6.Give two examples of how you could ensure you reserve a persons privacy

7.Its five minutes before you are due to go off duty - a resident asks you to come to their room as they have received a letter they don't understand - What do you do What do you say?

8.When you meet someone for the first time do you:
a. Greet them with a friendly hello love
b. Greet them with the name on their admission form
c. Ask them what they wish to be called

9. A person with dementia thinks you are a relative of theirs,
what do you do when they ask you to go home with them?

10 When supporting a person with their personal hygiene where do you start

11. How many Dignity Do's are there?

Hi Jan,

My ability to access the internet was zero between Sunday and this morning, because the public libraries I use had lost internet connectivity (and it is now 'back but very slow'). You can still download previously attached files, so I'm guessing the software to upload files is still there, but somebody forgot to put in a 'front page' link to it.

I think this 'dignity' thing is really an ongoing mindset - it isn't a case of checking off behaviour against any list, it is more an issue of 'thinking the right way all of the time'. Which can, I guess, become challenging if you are being worked-to-the-limit and have got no 'slack time', and if you think your performance is being judged from 'targets'. I seem to remember that one of Rochelle Monte's objections to 15-minute homecare visits, is that usually they simply don't give the carer enough time to interact in what I will here phrase as 'a caring and dignified way'.

Jan Burns 30/01/15

Hi Mike,
Sorry to hear you have been experiencing problems with your internet access - I have reported the problems regarding the files so watch this space.
Dignity is an ongoing mind set - and yes it is not just a case of checking off behaviour against a list, but there are times when lists do have there place as a warm up or initiation for further discussion. It most certainly should be an issue of thinking the right way all the time but unfortunately for some it still is not. I have spent 3hours today working with a team to promote dignity and integrate the personalisation agenda with dignity - they were very receptive, their values were excellent I am confident they will strive to make a difference. By the way I will be on the BBC radio Wiltshire myself in the morning making a recording to go out Sunday Morning on the Graham Rogers show, have a listen if you can access it.

mike stone 31/01/15

Hi Jan,

The only way I can listen to the radio on a Sunday morning is via old-fashioned analogue radio - as I live in Coventry, I'm fairly sure I can't get Radio Wilshire. The thing about my listening to interesting 'health stuff', is that I almost invariably 'stumble across items' instead of deliberately tuning in - much the same is true of NHS Consultations, which I tend to notice [annoyingly] after they have 'closed' (there is one peculiar exception to that - for the Neuberger review of the LCP, I had submitted somethinfg to it, before the details of how you could make a submission had appeared on the internet. It turned out that my DH contact, who I asked 'how would a layman make a submission to neuberger ?', came back with 'My office is acting as the temporary secretariat for the review - send it to me, and I'll pass it on').

Not sure if BBC Radio Wiltshire will have an online 'catch-up' service - I'm guessing not.

Jan Burns 31/01/15

Hi Mike re BBC radio Wiltshire - there is a catch up service, I dread listening to it though. The recording was early this morning but after i had been waxing lyrical I it was stopped because we were running out of time and I hadn't answered all of his questions. I'm not that experienced with radio so had to compose myself take a deep breath and carry on. What was interesting I was asked about tick lists and training I thought tat was ironic since our previous postings,I was also asked about poor care the ten dignity dos.and much more in time that flew by. Ah well it was very positive that they will be promoting DAD on the actual day.

mike stone 01/02/15

Hi Jan,

'Ah well it was very positive that they will be promoting DAD on the actual day.'

is good.

I suspect that 'we were running out of time and I couldn't really explain what I'd wanted to' is very common for radio and TV interviews. I also think that the media, while not exactly wanting 'soundbites', are after a limited number of points, expressed very straightforwardly and concisely, from their interviewees. I can 'see why they want that' - because their audiences, are 'non expert' in the main.

I have a similar problem, with e-mails, etc: it isn't easy to construct 'your argument' until you've figured out what the person at the other end already knows/understands. Unfortunately, my particular debate is quite intricate in a legal sense - which is why my posts on the subject ramble on at length (a combination of trying to be clear for non-expert readers, and also arguing the legal points, for 'experts').

Jan Burns 01/02/15

Too true Mike - I can understand they want sound bites for the sake of their listeners - but explanations/elaborations to go with them as succinctly possible are possible when you know what it coming up. They told me i would have 5 mins but on the day apparently that 5mins changed to 3.5!!. I didn't know about the broadcast till Friday night and not wanting to miss an opportunity to promote dignity I offered to undertake the interview. I appreciate what you say about needing to know what those on the other end's level of understanding is. Still we can but continue to persevere for the cause. As they say onward and upward - we can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time!!
Thanks for your continued support.
Jan

'They told me i would have 5 mins but on the day apparently that 5mins changed to 3.5!!.'

I can see how that would be rather annoying !

It also means - even if you get 'the promised 5 minutes' - that any 'change of question' can seriously throw you off plan, doesn't it.

I'm about to try and find this Radio Wiltshire online catch-up service: as I'm hopeless at finding things, and I'm only online for 2 hrs a day in a library, I'm unsure of my chances.

mike stone 02/02/15

I've just been trying to find on the BBC websites, the Graham Rogers show for Sunday morning from Radio Wiltshire - I can't find it. I might have another look tomorrow - I find the BBC online pages, very difficult to use/navigate.

Rita Umney 02/02/15

Mike good luck with the search.....

I sent an e-mail to BBC Wiltshire yesterday, asking about Jan's piece and if that programme can be heard online - I've just opened the very helpful, and comprehensive, reply:

Dear Mr Stone,

Thank-you for your email.

To listen to the interview with Jan Burns please click on http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02h1w1f and fast forward to 2hr and 7mins into the broadcast.

Regards,

Matthew Smith

I've just opened an e-mail from Rochelle Monte:

Think this is what you were looking for

It seems pretty clear, that I'm bad at finding stuff in websites ! I'm not sure why - is it that I'm too old, too dim, or what ?

mike stone 04/02/15

Hi again Jan,

I've listened to the piece, so far as I can determine. It seems to me that yuo got 22 seconds, and then the care-home manager Sue Harris got a few minutes. It struck me as being a good piece, and I think Sue said many things which you would probably have said.

Sue mentioned a couple of my pet topics for analysis - 'patient-centred' and 'best interests' - but they couldn't be properly analysed on that radio show. But I think one issue of great concern - how do staff or family raise concerns, because staff often fear being fired, and relatives often feel their loved-one will be evern more badly treated if they kick up a fuss - could be discussed on that type of show: pity Sue wasn't asked that particular question by Graham. Perhaps next time ?

NAZIRA AUCHARAGRAM 01/03/15

I'm working on the survey for dignity similar like the quiz. Once finish will post it so that we can all discuss. I do like the quiz it gives me some idea of how to mix and match.

Jan Burns 02/03/15

Thank you Nazira - I look forward to what you have to post - I'm sure it will generate discussion.

Hi Jan and others
I am a nurse specialist elderly care from the Netherlands and
I follow your site for a while because I'm very interested in the theme of respect and dignity, and find that you deliver good contributions!
Now I would like our young doctors in our hospital reeducate and search materials. A few years ago I saw a film of the RCN called How Would You feel, the film I found back (via Youtube) but I seem to remember that there are also teaching materials had to? Do any of you where I can find this? Whether someone has an idea for teaching (materials)?

Yours
Sylvia Damen

Jan Burns 04/03/15

Hi Sylvia I don't know that film personally but will post your request on the Dignity in Action Facebook page - someone may be able to help. You could also look at Amanda Waring's website she has produced films and other resources that can help promote dignity. Her powerful film 'What do you see'? is available from her website and there is also a you tube version. Thank you for your continued support with our campaign.
