Your Top 3 Care issues
Hi all,
This is juat a reminder to let you know that we are asking all champions to tell us what their top 3 dignity issues are that each of you beleive should be addressed as soon as possible. We have a survey on the homepage which will take you just 2 minutes to complete.
At the moment the top 3 issues as voted for by champions are.
- People are often not listened to or treated as an individual
- People need stimulating activities and a sense of purpose (when in a care home or at home alone)
- People need more autonomy and choice in their daily routines and surroundings
Do you agree with these? If not then you need to make your self heard by completing the survey on the homepage.
Please give us your opinions.
Thanks

I think the 3 points chosen are definitly the main issues that I have come across
Tracey
I agree your top three choices.
The main problems that I come across are: lack of staff and low pay. These two issues are causing major difficulties within the care homes that I have been employed in. We often do not have even enough staff to toilet and feed everybody.
Ensuring that people have enough to occupy them is important, but I don't think people realise just how poorly these places are run.
In my opinion the other important issue is attention to detail. For example when issues are brought up they are not followed through in a thorough manner.I raised the point about a month ago regarding cups being to heavy for my mum and was told lightweight beakers would be provided however this has not been done.
Hello Gordon
It is important your Mums recieves the best possible care.I would go back to
them and remind them about the Lightweight cups there not expensive to buy I
can see how frustrated it can be I would feel the same
Regards
Lorraine

I agree with your points about low pay and staff shortages. Care homes deal with vulnurable adults and require the best care possible so in turn if care homes paid higher wages staff would respect their employers and take a pride in their job.
I have worked in several care homes with different pay rates for carers and other staff. I have seen no link between pay rate and the quality of care that staff give. However, I do feel that Carers mostly do a great job and deserve recognition for this.
I agree with the top 3 Care Issues but also feel that for residents in care homes, the top need is for peoples lives to be filled with activity and involvement that promotes a feeling of wellbeing.
Absolutely re what Scott has said around actitivies and maximising older peoples' potential in care homes which relates to their well-being. I hope everyone is looking at the My Home Life website as this really is the way forward to support staff working in care homes all round the UK. Its focus is on residents of the care homes but in a way that looks at the experiences of living, working, visiting and actually dying in a care home.
