The Fewcott Arms
“The Fewcott Arms”
Fewcott House Nursing Home held a memorable Dignity Day celebration. After discussions with our residents and staff, we decided to turn back the clock and create "The Fewcott Arms" public house (for one day only, unfortunately!) to serve the residents their favourite tipple and old fashioned pub food.
We converted the nurses' station into a bar, complete with optics, beer pumps, bar towels, bottled beers, pub mirrors and other pub memorabilia. A blackboard displayed the lunch menu of basket meals – scampi, chicken or sausage and chips. Authentic pub songs of yesteryear were played until closing time.
Family and friends arrived to join their relatives at the bar, order their drinks and meals and then sit at the surrounding tables, which were set with beer mats and tomato-shaped ketchup dispensers.
One resident who used to manage a pub became very involved with setting up the bar – and organising the bar staff!
Everyone had a wonderful day and the pub remained “open” until the last resident retired to bed.
