Dignity Day Children's Writing Competition

In order to promote an awareness of dignity values and as part of our Dignity Action Challenge we created a Schools Writing Competition which was opened to all aspiring young writers in years 5 and 6. Entries were accepted through the schools and prizes awarded to the top 3 writers and a special award given to the first place winners school.
Evaluation of written work was based on grammar, spelling, vocabulary, structure as well as logic and content.
Judging was completely independent with the marking and evaluating the pieces individually and then coming together with their findings to nominate the winners for this year.
Winning School : Christ Church CEP Academy
First Place: Lexi - Christ Church CEP Academy
Second Place: Sarah– St. Eanswythe Primary School
Third Place: Sophie - Christ Church CEP Academy
Judges:
Karen Marwood - Chair Lady ‘Write by the Sea’ and blog Karens World. Presently she is writing a book and as well as some short stories
Tony Quarrington - Writer of prose and poetic pieces on Folkestone. Currently writing book on the history of the Old High Street
Michele Sheldon - Award-winning author of short stories published in a diverse range of magazines and anthologies. She has written plays performed at Folkestone Harbour Arm and Dover Castle and for a podcast.
This was the first time we had ever put together a competition that involved the schools and due to its success we are now looking at making this an annual event. Next year we will kick off with a writing workshop that will be held at one of the participating schools, inviting all the local schools to select their top writers to attend. The workshop will be given by this years judges who are willing to share their knowledge of writing and presentation, as well as a representative from Pelham House who will highlight ‘Dignity in Caring’ for those different to ourselves.
