Dignity for all!
Integra Care Management Ltd – Winchester Road Service in Southampton, Hampshire.
Dignity Action Day 1st February 2013
Winchester Road is a small care home in Hampshire providing residential care for up to 8 people with a learning disability, autism and complex needs. We are committed to promoting dignity through all aspects of peoples’ daily lives and have a brilliant Dignity Champion, Julie Johnson who works tirelessly to make sure we consistently implement high standards of dignity through all daily living activities. Julie is well supported by Beverley Hambidge our Registered Manager.
We had a fantastic Dignity Day, supporting residents to access our local community by visiting a local pub for a meal. We did a lot of preparation to make sure Dignity Day would be a well organised and successful occasion enjoyed by everyone. Beverley and Julie thoughtfully chose a local pub which serves quality food and has a friendly atmosphere and visited the pub to discuss and choose the best time to book a table for everyone. We wanted the quietest time of the day in a quiet area of the pub to minimise any anxieties. We booked a table which was in the quietest area and brought back a menu so people could be supported to choose their own meal.
We currently have 7 residents who all attended the meal, 2 people chose beef and ale pie; 2 people chose fish and chips; one person chose steak and one person chose chicken. One person who has difficulty making choices was supported to have a meal which we know is one of his preferences – jacket potato with cheese and beans. A range of puddings were also chosen.
The outing was a brilliant success and a heart warming event with most staff attending; one staff member especially came in on her day off as she is a key worker for one of the resident’s. We decorated the table with balloons and all our residents were calm and happy and enjoyed their meal together, as well as the environment. Some residents had a really good giggle together. Beverley got all the drinks in for everyone –
Many thanks to Bev and the team for all the hard work and making this day a special one for our residents.
