Sky High

“Choice”, “Respect” and “Kindness” were some of the messages floating into the sky over Crossflatts on Dignity Action Day.

The words were on tags attached to balloons released by people who use the Thompson Court Resource Centre, in Morton Lane.

They, along with relatives, friends and staff members, were celebrating national Dignity Action Day.

After releasing their balloons outside the resource centre, visitors also enjoyed cakes, a fish and chip supper and an evening of entertainment provided by a singer.

Jayne Myatt, senior care assistant at the centre, said that the dignity campaign focused on equal treatment for all.

But she added that Thompson Court was concentrating on the issue of proper behaviour towards older people. As part of the day’s activities staff arranged a “Who’s who” picture board featuring photographs of users of the centre when they were younger.

Ms Myatt said this was one way of reminding the elderly and those who looked after them that they were all young once.

Centre manager Miriam Dunn said "care workers now had guidelines to follow, which recommended they treat those they look after as they would like to be treated themselves."
